Harmful Effects Of Cyber Bullying
Research had demonstrated a number of serious consequences of
cyberbullying victimization. For example, victims have lower self-esteem,
increased suicidal ideation, and a variety of emotional responses, retaliating,
being scared, frustrated, angry, and depressed.People have reported that
Cyberbullying can be more harmful than traditional bullying because there is no
escaping it.One
of the most damaging effects is that a victim begins to avoid friends and
activities, often the very intention of the cyberbully.Cyberbullying
campaigns are sometimes so damaging that victims have committed suicide. There
are at least four examples in the United States where cyberbullying has been
linked to the suicide of a teenager. The suicide of
Megan Meier is a recent example
that led to the conviction of the adult perpetrator of the attacks. Another
example of harmful effects is the death of Holly Grogan who ended her life by
jumping of a 30-foot bridge near Gloucester in the UK . It was reported that a
number of her schoolmates has posted a number of hateful messages on her
Facebook page.According
to Lucie Russell, director of campaigns, policy and participation at youth
mental health charity Young Minds, young people who suffer from mental disorder are
vulnerable to cyberbullying as they are sometimes unable to shrug it off:When someone says nasty things
healthy people can filter that out, they're able to put a block between that
and their self-esteem. But mentally unwell people don't have the strength and
the self-esteem to do that, to separate it, and so it gets compiled with
everything else. To them, it becomes the absolute truth – there's no filter,
there's no block. That person will take that on, take it as fact.Social
media has allowed bullies to disconnect from the impact they may be having on
others.

If we find anyone who is being cyberbullied then we should handle him/her very carefully.
ReplyDeleteAs with other forms of bullying the target of cyberbullying may be in need of emotional support. We should reassure them that they have done the right thing by telling someone; recognise that it must have been difficult for them to deal with; and reiterate that no-one has a right to do that to them.

ReplyDeleteCyber-bullying has been a problem for a very long time. Due to the development of our technology today, cyber-bullying has become one of the most difficult issues to resolve in our society. Since cyber-bullying issues are more likely to happen at schools, social networking, and mobile phones; Teachers, principals, and parents are responsible to monitor, prevent, and punish cyber-bullying. The expectations of most parents of the school, is protection. Meanwhile, many staff feel unprepared and unwilling to be prosecutors and judges because they do not want to be sued for something done which might seem right to them but not to others, especially to parents who are responsible for the child's well being.
Students and teachers should always have conversations about relationships on a daily basis. Although teachers can't preach kindness to students; but they can teach students how to be nice and kind to one another. Teachers needs to structure learning activities in which children can learn to view individual differences as unique sources of strength. For example, a lawsuit was filed against a high school about bullying in upstate New York; a gay teenager sued the Mohawk Central School District, saying school officials had not protected him. "The district said it would increase staff training to prevent harassment" (Eckholm and Katie 3). It is very important that every student, not just the few that sign up for special projects or after school activities, but students who are involved in any various activities in school should attend meetings about teaching students how to respect each other. This will help teachers prevent cyber-bullying in school by drawing students together. People have to understand that some children bully because they have emotional and developmental problems, or because they come from abusive families. Teachers have to understand that this is only because students require their help.
